Paintball Kingdom hosted their latest scenario game, entitled Biological Aftermath, in late October 2008 at their field facility outside Charlotte, North Carolina. While turnout was smaller than expected, those who did make the trip enjoyed a fun day of intense scenario play on a fun and challenging field. With less than fifty players in attendance at the game and plenty of wooded, rolling acreage to play, members of both teams had their pick between charging directly at the opposition’s base for head-to-head slugfests or the slightly more stealthy approach of sneaking around the field to attack opponents by a less direct route. Both styles of play were rewarded with success at Biological Aftermath, while Paintball Kingdom’s referee staff kept a tight rein on the game with strict enforcement of overshooting rules. Early-on in the game it was clear that, whether due to mismatched teams or better strategy and execution, the red team were the bullies of the day, able to push the blue team around the field at-will. Most firefights and engagements throughout the course of the event started at or around the small village and fort near mid-field but ended within a few feet of the blue team’s While on the field it looked to be the red team’s day, the blue team was able to use the red team’s success to their advantage. Lulled into a false sense of security by their large point lead and clear dominance when it came to shooting paintballs back and forth, the red team let their guard down at their base and late in the game, two members of the blue team were able to sneak completely past the red team, into their base and steal all of their props, bringing them back into contention for a points victory! As is the case with every Paintball Kingdom scenario game, rates of fire were high thanks in no small part to the proliferation of inexpensive electronic paintball guns. While Kingdom management admits this is a point of frustration, they see no easy way to correct it as even electronic Spyder and Tippmann models are now capable of shooting well in excess of ten shots per second. Instead of attempting to enforce a rate or mode of fire cap or ban that cannot be enforced on the field, they instead enforce a strict overshooting rule intended to keep players sportsmanlike behind their guns and safe even when wearing paint from multiple opponents. Thanks to a caring, dedicated field staff, this concept was successful at Biological Aftermath. By the end of the day, the game was over, the gear was packed and the points were totaled, with the red team, predictably, on top. However, it wasn’t by the huge margin many expected due to their ability to win practically every gun fight they got into, thanks to the ingenuity and risk-taking of the blue team late in the game. Paintball Kingdom produces scenario games regularly at their facility in Marshville, North Carolina, in addition to regular recreational play and special events. headquarters. At one point in the game, there were simply no more blue players on the field to be eliminated and the red team had to be moved from the blue team’s base to allow the embattled blue squad to reinsert.
