Fresh from the "In Case You Missed It in the Latest Digital Magazine" file is our recent Mini-Review of Proto's new Primo loader, a non-motorized loader that Proto claims can feed 8-10 paintballs per second! PaintballX3 got our hands on one and decided to see if Proto's "dangerously competitive" loader delivers.

Dye created a frenzy in the paintball world, and more specifically the hopper market, when they introduced the Rotor high-end tournament loader. Teams that didn’t even like Dye equipment, or those who were sponsored by competing companies even jumped on the Dye Rotor bandwagon and it has become a paintball sales phenomenon! Now Proto is getting in on the hopper action, but at the other end of the spectrum. Proto’s new Primo loader aims to make a splash in the entry level loader market, as even with no motor, no batteries and nothing inside but a tray, it advertises feed rates of between eight and ten balls per second!

So light it’s not even worth talking about because, well, it’s just a basic, non-motorized hopper with nothing to add weight but the paintballs, the Proto Primo loader is advertised as “dangerously competitive” and we can see why. The hopper holds 200 paintballs, features a nice flip lid that would look as much at home on a Rotor as it does on the fifteen dollar model and is made from high-quality polymer that looks able to handle years of rough play with no problems. A tray within the loader sits above the feed neck that, according to Proto, helps alleviate feed jams and increases rates of fire. The Primo loader comes attractively packaged for retail sale.

To test the feed rates of 8-10 balls per second as claimed by Proto, we loaded a Proto Primo loader with 200 DXS paintballs and pushed it into the feed neck of a Planet Eclipse Ego paintball gun, set in uncapped semiautomatic mode. Shooting over a Paintball Radarchron Rate of Fire unit, the gun fired 120 shots without skipping a beat, with an average rate of fire recorded at 10.4 balls per second!  After this, the paintballs jammed but required only a minor shake to feed the rest of the hopper without incident! Plainly speaking, the Proto Primo loader really is “dangerously competitive.” It delivers 8-10 balls per second reliably and with very few jams, in comparison to other non-motorized basic loaders which require shaking every few shots to keep from jamming. For players on a budget, pump players or those using markers like a Tippmann or a Spyder, the Proto Primo loader is an outstanding choice that can save the buyer a great deal of money over a more expensive, motorized loader.
