On warm peaceful October morning, found the Dothraki clan lead by James ‘Jedi’ McDonald and the Greyjoy clan lead by Steve ‘Bond’ Burges started gathering to fight over held territory. No, this is not the Game of Thrones television show, but Game of Thrones II put on by Millennium Paintball Productions and hosted by Bear Claw Paintball in Fayetteville, Tennessee. Game of Thrones 2 is the second game in a series of games leading to a championship game between the clans of the world of Game of Thrones. Who would come up with a crazy idea like this? Well, none other than Ben Torricelli of Millennium Paintball Productions. With the help of the Bear Claw staff, a great week of paintball was to be had.
Before the invasion of the Greyjoy territory by the Dothraki could begin, the all important players’ meeting had to take place. Not only was Ben going over the special rules for this game, but Scott ‘Daddy” Bolden took time to recognize a few people. Robert and Susie Juengel, and Mario Maresco were recognized for their outstanding performance in promoting the sport of paintball. Robert and Suzie established Bear Claw Paintball.
The battle for territory started earlier in the day because of so many missions, Ben had to start the game one hour earlier. The opening battle started with the Dothraki horde landing on the shores of Greyjoy territory. Because of the craziness of Mr. Torricelli, the Greyjoy clan found themselves stretched thin from the beach to the far reaches of the field. The first thing on the list for both sides was getting to their bases. Since they started on opposite sides of the field, they had to go through each other to get there. As the day wore on, battle lines were established and missions started to be run. During this time, Bond found himself being pushed out of his base surprisingly by his own daughter, Katie ‘Gizmo’ Burges. She decided to take charge of heading up the missions so her dad could run the field. Even with this strategy, the Greyjoy clan found themselves slowly losing control of major areas of the field as the Dothraki ran more and more of their missions. As missions were run the sight of smoke was seen throughout the field since a vendor was on hand selling smoke, and boy was he selling plenty.
At the signal for the end of the day game, and dinner break began, all talk was on the impending night game and what Ben was planning. This time Greyjoy would find themselves landing on the same beach head as the Dothraki had landed on that morning. Thirty minutes before the landing, the clans began to get into position as the sun slowly set, and night took over. During this time, the staff of Bear Claw Paintball prepared to light the 10 foot high pyres. As time grew near, the pyres were set a blaze. The fires lit up the night sky as well as the beach. This lead to an awesome sight as the beach landing got underway. The only mission for the night game was to get off of the beach and hold 3 objectives inside the woods. There was only one problem. While Greyjoy was on the beach, everyone could reinsert, but once Greyjoy was off the beach and in the woods, once you were hit, you were out of the game. So it came down to whoever had the most players standing at the end of time would control the field. At the end of time, Greyjoy was only able to control one of the objectives for the night.
As dawn appeared and players started appearing from well deserved sleep, it found that the Dothraki leading in points with 3 hours of regular play and one final battle left to do. Both Gizmo and Bond would have to put their minds together to come up with a plan to pull ahead of the Dothraki, but this would not be enough. As the game started, the Greyjoys found the Dothraki all over the field and pushing on their base as well. The Greyjoys struggled to get their clan going on missions. This allowed the Dothraki to stretch their lead going into the final battle. After studying the situation, Bond determined that the Greyjoy’s would have to control all the objectives at the end of the final battle in order to pull ahead and win the game and the Iron throne. At the end of a tough fight, he Greyjoys only control four of the five objectives, which gave the win to the Dothraki clan by 1,000 points.
On another note, both MPP games and Bear Claw Paintball have discovered the word about the game and the field has been spreading. This game saw new teams and players coming from as far away as Florida and Texas. Some of these teams included the X-Men, Type 3, and UPPK (United Paintball Players of Kentuckian). It is not only the great woods field, good food, and great game design that bring these players and teams to Bear Claw, but the staff and outstanding attitude of the local and not so local regular players who are always there and ready to lend a helping hand. To show their appreciation, Bear Claw decided to award a player of the year award, starting with this game. This year’s recipient was Gary ‘Pap’ Winn of the Bounty Hunters.
A special thanks goes to the following companies for the prizes they donated: Empire, JT, Tippmann, and Custom Products. I would also like to mention that the one lone vendor to come out for this great game was Ultimate Paintball.
Bear Claw Paintball’s next game is their player appreciation/Toys for Tots game on December 14 & 15. This year the name of the game is Paint Trek: Battle for Charlie 3.
